Economic empowerment
From Shareideas
Mobile telephony is transforming the way people do business. M-banking. M-commerce. A new vocabulary has emerged to describe how mobile phones are being used to get and repay loans, transfer funds, purchase goods, and pay bills. In parts of the world where computer access remains scarce, mobile phones enable micro-entrepreneurs to access valuable knowledge via the Internet. Those living in rural areas can now retrieve to up-to-the-minute information (e.g., market prices for their goods), which they can use to boost incomes. Enhanced communication is allowing women micro-business owners to get and receive orders, and collaborate to maximize sales.
A 2005 study by the Centre for Economic Policy Research found increased rates of economic growth in developing countries with high mobile phone penetration. The economic benefits of mobile phones at the local level can increase a country’s overall Gross Domestic Product. While challenges remain – for example, the relatively high cost of handsets in poor communities – mobile communications is expanding economic opportunity for many who have been left out.
